In early 2026, Eli was approached to deliver a permanent mural for the exterior wall of Sydenham Library in southeast London.Rather than commissioning a design outright, the project came from the community. Working with the Library's Artists in Residence Anna Arianova and Susan Rafique, Eli co-facilitated design workshops with primary and secondary-school aged children who attend the Library's regular free art clubs. He also worked with Sydenham Arts to run a co-design workshop with older residents of the local community. Eli condensed everyone's contributions into an image which also takes inspiration from the wildlife of Sydenham Hill Wood.

The participatory painting process took place in April 2026. Eli was joined by more than 30 volunteers, including Sydenham-based artists, Library users, London School of Muralism students, and curious children who spotted the mural across Home Park and came to get involved.Eli was supported by the London School of Muralism to complete the mural as part of the school's 2026 cohort. To learn more about the mural, follow the link below:

Eli sees art as a crucial tool of social connection - he's particularly keen to hold creative space for groups who face marginalisation in their access to self-expression. Putting this principle into practice, Eli has capably facilitated art projects in complex settings, including prisons and psychiatric wards, and has worked with queer youth groups, isolated older people, and young carers. He brings an inclusive, trauma-informed approach, with training and experience in supporting learners with additional needs/SEND. His teaching methods emphasise imagination, collaboration, and playfulness.Follow the links below to learn more about some of the organisations Eli has worked with:

✤ Some things which inspire Eli's artwork... ✤

Eli Delbaere is a visual artist, arts educator and anarchist. Drawn to creating immersive environments via large-scale painting, his developing mural practice is known for its blend of figuration and abstraction, carving a niche for fact and fantasy to collide.
✶
Eli’s idiosyncratic visual language fuses his transsexuality with dense symbolism from his Celtic heritage, combining ancient art-making rituals with pioneering politics.
Primarily self-taught, Eli seeks to create socially-engaged art which, like a form of contemporary folklore, is immersed in living culture - in sharp contrast to the separatist, purist concept of ‘fine art’ which exists as a commodity in cordoned-off elitist spaces. This informs his work in poster design and muralism: artforms which are functional, fundamentally accessible, which act ’in concert with communities’ and carry anti-capitalist histories.
✶
Embodying his beliefs that art should radically reclaim and transform space, forge intersectional social bonds, and give a voice to ‘othered’ subcultures, his imperfect work is found in non-institutional, non-hierarchical spaces such as squats, raves, streets, zines, bedrooms and DIY venues.
✶
"I do not want art for a few, any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few." ✶ William Morris
Eli is a graduate of the 2026 cohort of the London School of Muralism. He has been selected for artist residencies both nationally and internationally. His zines are currently stocked in stores across the UK and he has installed permanent murals. He has years of experience teaching art to all ages and abilities.
